What's Behind The Behaviour: Understanding Girls' Mental Health When They Are in Freeze
The program
If your daughter's behaviour feels confusing, unpredictable, or out of character, and you're constantly wondering, "Why is she like this?" this episode offers a transformative reframe that changes everything. Behaviour isn't random; it's a powerful signal from the nervous system, especially in girls' mental health and adolescent behaviour contexts.
When girls enter a freeze state, their brain, body, and emotions collaborate to protect them from overwhelm, not to push you away.
I break down what freeze looks like in real life, the physiological changes happening during shutdown, why traditional logic and consequences may fail, and how to support regulation effectively without pushing or fixing.
This episode provides essential parenting support to mothers who want to improve their mother daughter relationship by understanding behavioural messages deeply. You’ll gain clarity and reduce fear as you learn to see behaviour as the messenger, not the problem.
Perfect for mums raising girls who seem distant, flat, or overwhelmed underneath it all.
And listen, if you’re sitting there thinking “I need more than this podcast episode”, I’m running a live webinar tonight - 19th February at 7pm GMT.
It’s free. It’s 45 minutes. And I’m going to teach you exactly what freeze looks like, why we miss it, and what actually helps.
You’ll also get to connect with other mums who are in the exact same place.
So if you want in, grab your spot here.
Spaces are limited because I want to keep it interactive, so if you’re thinking about it, just register now.
If you’re listening to this thinking, “that’s me,” I’ve got something for you.
It’s called Connect the Dots.
It’s a really simple guide to help you slow down, look at what you’re actually seeing, and then zoom out and consider what else might be going on for your daughter.
You can grab it for free here.

Whisperer — the podcast for mums supporting girls who are overwhelmed, disconnected, or quietly struggling.

I’m Rach Friedli, and today we’re slowing this right down.

Because when we don’t understand what’s underneath behaviour, we either:
• try to correct it
• try to fix it
• or worry ourselves sick about it

But when we understand the body, brain, and heart, behaviour starts to make sense.

⸻

A Core Reframe (This Changes Everything)

Here it is:

Behaviour follows state.

Not values.
Not effort.
Not motivation.

State.

And when a girl is in freeze, her behaviour reflects a system that’s conserving energy and protecting itself.

⸻

The Body: Where Behaviour Begins

Freeze is a physiological response.

The nervous system senses prolonged stress and says:
“Slow everything down.”

So the body adapts by:
• reducing energy output
• dulling sensation
• limiting engagement
• conserving resources

This can look like:
• withdrawal
• low energy
• disinterest
• emotional flatness
• avoidance

Not because she doesn’t care —
but because her body is overloaded.

⸻

The Brain: Why Logic Doesn’t Land

Teen brains are still developing:
• emotional regulation
• impulse control
• perspective-taking
• stress tolerance

When a nervous system is in freeze:
• the thinking brain goes offline
• the threat system stays active
• decision-making becomes harder

So asking her to explain, reflect, or change often goes nowhere.

Not because she won’t.
Because she can’t — yet.

⸻

The Heart: What’s Happening Emotionally

Emotionally, freeze often comes with:
• shame
• self-blame
• disconnection from feelings
• fear of being a burden
• fear of getting it wrong

Inside, she may be holding thoughts like:
• “I don’t know what’s wrong with me”
• “I can’t keep up”
• “I’m tired of disappointing people”

So she pulls back.

Not to reject you —
but to protect herself.

⸻

Why Behaviour Can Look So Inconsistent

One of the hardest parts for mums is the inconsistency.

Some days she’s okay.
Some days she’s not.

That’s because freeze isn’t permanent.
It fluctuates based on:
• stress load
• sleep
• social pressure
• sensory input
• feeling understood or not

This isn’t manipulation.

It’s a nervous system doing its best to cope.

⸻

Why Focusing on Behaviour Misses the Point

When we focus on:
• stopping the behaviour
• correcting the behaviour
• analysing the behaviour

We skip the most important question:

What state is her nervous system in right now?

Because without addressing state,
behaviour won’t shift sustainably.

⸻

What Actually Helps (Body First, Always)

Support starts by increasing safety and capacity.

That looks like:
• predictable routines
• gentle rhythm in the day
• reduced pressure to perform
• movement and time outside
• calm, regulated adults
• connection without agenda

None of this requires her to “talk it through”.

The body feels safety first.
The rest follows.

⸻

What Progress Really Looks Like

Progress isn’t a personality change.

It looks like:
• slightly more flexibility
• fewer shutdowns
• quicker recovery
• moments of engagement
• neutral days

Neutral is not nothing.

Neutral means the system is stabilising.

⸻

Closing Anchor

Behaviour is not the problem.

It’s the signal.

When we listen to it through the body,
we stop reacting —
and start responding.

⸻

Outro – Support & Webinar

If this episode helped you make sense of what you’re seeing, I want to invite you to my free webinar:

Becoming Your Own Teen
