The Teen Whisperer: Mums, Do You Feel Like Your Self-Worth is Tied to Your Productivity?

Hi, and welcome to The Teen Whisperer—the podcast for mums of teenage daughters who are trying their best to figure out this whole “teenager” thing without completely losing the plot. I’m Rach Friedli, and I help mums like you build stronger, more connected relationships with your daughters by understanding what’s really going on beneath all those eye rolls and slammed doors.

Oh yeh, and by the way, I’m a mum too, so I 100% get it!

Together, we’ll tackle the highs, lows, and everything in between with a physiology-first approach. Welcome to today’s episode. I have a question for you—do you ever feel like your self-worth is tied to how much you get done in a day? Like, if you’re not checking things off your to-do list, then you’re somehow failing?

I know I’ve been there. And let me tell you—it’s exhausting. You’re running yourself into the ground trying to prove you’re enough, and then, when things don’t go as planned, that little voice creeps in, saying, “See? You’re not good enough.”

Today, we’re going to talk about that. We’ll explore where those feelings come from, how they impact not just your mind but your body, and how to start breaking free from that cycle. Plus, I’ll share a few practical tools to help you reframe your brain. You ready? Let’s dive in.

Section 1: Why We Tie Self-Worth to Productivity

Let’s start by being honest—how many of us grew up hearing things like, “You’ll never amount to anything” or “You’re just not good enough”? Maybe it wasn’t said directly, but it was implied in the way expectations were set, or the way failure wasn’t an option.

For some of us, it wasn’t just words—it was about needing to prove ourselves over and over again, feeling like we had to earn love, respect, or even basic acknowledgment by working harder than everyone else. Somewhere along the way, those beliefs stuck.

Now, as mums, that pressure hasn’t gone away. Instead, it’s morphed into this constant need to be everything to everyone. We tell ourselves, “If I just do more—if I work harder, keep the house spotless, always show up for the kids, and never drop the ball—then maybe I’ll finally feel like I’m enough.”

But here’s the thing: It doesn’t work. Because no matter how much you do, the feeling doesn’t go away. Why? Because self-worth has nothing to do with how much you get done. It’s about who you are—not what you do.

Section 2: The Physical and Emotional Impact

So, what happens when you’re stuck in this cycle of tying self-worth to productivity? It’s not just a mental battle—it’s a full-body experience.

Think about the last time you felt like you’d let someone down or hadn’t “done enough.” Did you notice your body’s reaction? Maybe you felt your heart race, your stomach churn, or your hands get clammy. Maybe you couldn’t sleep because your mind wouldn’t stop replaying everything you should have done.

This is your body’s fight-or-flight response kicking in. Your brain is perceiving a threat—not a real one, like being chased by a tiger, but a perceived one, like missing an important meeting or feeling judged by another mum at school pickup. Your brain reacts the same way: It pumps out stress hormones like cortisol, making you feel on edge, irritable, or downright exhausted.

The problem is, when you’re stuck in this loop, it’s not just about one bad day. Over time, chronic stress can lead to burnout, overwhelm, and even physical health issues. And as mums, we tend to ignore those signs because we think, “I don’t have time to fall apart.”

But let me tell you something: Ignoring the signs doesn’t make them go away. In fact, it just makes it harder to break the cycle.

Section 3: Breaking the Cycle

So, how do we start to break this cycle? It all begins with awareness.

When you feel your stress levels rising—your heart racing, your stomach churning—pause and ask yourself:

• What am I feeling right now?

• What triggered this?

• Am I reacting to the present moment, or is this an old story resurfacing?

Most of the time, the stress we feel isn’t about what’s happening right now. It’s about those old beliefs creeping back in—the ones that tell us we’re not good enough unless we’re constantly “doing.” These are called emotional memories and they’re of a time when your brain literally takes you back to the first time when you felt triggered and those symptoms come rushing back, even though the situation has changed. Recognising this is the first step to breaking free.

Now, here’s where it gets practical. Let me share three tools that can help you shift your mindset:

1. Reframe the Narrative

The next time you catch yourself thinking, “I didn’t get enough done today,” try flipping the script. Instead, focus on what you did accomplish, no matter how small. Did you spend five minutes connecting with your teen? Did you take a moment to breathe? Those wins matter.

2. Practice Compassionate Self-Talk

Imagine the way you’d speak to your best friend if she came to you feeling overwhelmed. You wouldn’t say, “Well, you should have done more.” You’d reassure her, remind her of her strengths, and encourage her to take care of herself. Start speaking to yourself with the same kindness.

3. Set Realistic Goals

It’s easy to feel like you’re failing when your to-do list is endless. Instead, focus on 1-3 priorities each day. By setting achievable goals, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed—and more likely to end your day feeling accomplished.

Section 4: Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead

Here’s my message for you today: Your worth isn’t tied to your to-do list. You are enough—not because of what you do, but because of who you are.

This week, I challenge you to notice when those old stories pop up. Write them down if you can, and reflect on how they make you feel. Next time, we’ll dive deeper into how to let go of those stories, tap into the power of purpose, and unlock your true potential as a woman and a mum.

Before we go, I want to share something exciting—my brand-new membership, launching at the end of January.
